Apr 30, 2012 · 1947 Marlin 39a firing pin broken. Hello, well I went to take down my 39A to look at my broken ejector and when I picked up the rifle I saw a small piece of metal in the case. I picked it up and new where it belonged right away. It was the end of the firing pin. There is a flat spring placed above the chamber. The screw that holds it can be seen on top of the receiver. That spring serves two purposes. 1) It keeps the firing pin from rising above the rim of the cartridge. 2) It keeps the cartridge aligned with the chamber for smooth chambering. If that spring is missing, you will get some failures to feed.Over many, many rounds that "cam up" action causes fatigue and eventually the firing pin will break. That is, when I say many, I mean lotsa' many.
